I am among a parent of others trying to teach their kids appreciation for what we have living in this beautiful city. One of the best ways for a parent to do that is to bring their children to a beach cleanup.
Since April, Surfrider Foundation has been holding two beach cleanups a month – one on a Huntington Beach City location and the other on a Huntington Beach state location with a local sponsor backing the event. Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting our beaches.
On August 11th, my son and I participated in the Huntington Beach State clean up sponsored by Hurley H20. We brought our friends to help as well. Even though we have participated in a beach cleanup in the past, it still proves to be an eye opener every time. Even after arriving a couple of hours past the start time, we were still able to pick up plenty of trash even though it tended to be smaller in size along the Santa Ana River Jetty. To put things in perspective, they handed us a 12 oz bottle to collect cigarette butts – that seemed to fill up fast.
The next cleanup sponsored by Dukes takes place this Saturday, August 25th off of Goldenwest Street. All cleanups run from 8am-noon.
