Taking surfing to new heights..!

In fact, according to the American Red Cross, just one pint of blood can save three lives and someone is in need of blood every two seconds. If saving lives is not enough reason for you to donate blood, do it for the free juice and cookies. It only takes about 30 minutes to donate blood if you schedule an appointment. Donating blood is a free and easy way to give back to your community. Donors must be disease free, healthy, 17 years or older, and weigh at least 110 lbs. There is a local, Huntington Beach donor center at Lake Park that is open for 1:00pm to 7:00pm every few days. Upcoming donation dates are January 11th, 13th, and 20th. Check out a fund-raising event coming up this weekend at your nearby Ruby’s on November 4, 5, and 6th. When you purchase your food, 10% of the proceeds goes to A Leg Up Rescue’s WAGGIN’ TRAILS TRANSPORT BUS. A Leg Up Rescue saves dogs from euthanasia and places them in forever homes. We’ve added a transport vehicle where, in addition to placing our dogs locally, we also transport them to the Greater Northwest, where they are given great forever homes. The overcrowding of our California shelters results in many dogs being put to death. More than 300,000,000 dogs are euthanized each year in the U.S. ( AGAIN that’s THREE MILLION!) We’re able to save so many more now by transporting some of these wonderful animals to Oregon, Washington & Vancouver. We have been graciously given a bus from the Huntington Valley Boys & Girls Club. We’ve had the bus all fixed up and it’s now ready to roll with its first transport THIS MONTH!

However, gasoline, insurance, maintenance and a small stipend to our wonderful driver costs more than we currently have available. Therefore, we are asking you to please go to Ruby’s at any of the five locations listed on Nov. 4, 5, & 6, and have some wonderful food and you are automatically helping our transport bus get rolling.

Ecologico-Logic plans to market a variety of products and processes it has already developed and patented to transform the waste disposal industry, significantly improve agricultural productivity, and remediate environmental pollution.
Ecologico-Logic has developed an approach to the problem of waste disposal which is economically superior to current methods for a large segment of the waste disposal industry, and has the added advantage that it has none of the undesirable environmental consequences presented by current methods of waste disposal. This method is aerobic digestion, a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes incorporated in a machine we call the Muncher. The Muncher reduces waste and transforms the residue into saleable byproducts: liquid effluent, solid cake, and carbon dioxide. Both the effluent and the cake are extremely effective organic fertilizers with none of the liabilities presented by commercial chemical fertilizers. Finally, the Muncher can also be used to perform environmental cleanup of such toxic chemicals as PCBs, dioxins, and nitrates. The Muncher produces no hazardous gases or harmful byproducts. The Ecologico-Logic system is protected by U.S. patents.

It is with great pride Soroptinists introduce the 2011 Violet Richardson Award recipient Patricia Cosulich. Just a sophomore at H.B. High School Patricia has been active in a number of philanthropic endeavors. Starting a chapter of the World Vision Organization (students helping students in other parts of the world) initiating a club at HBHS is just the beginning. Hoops for Hope project and other fundraisers involving students and their families are inspiring many and creating hope for those who will benefit from her efforts. Meet Patricia as she accepts our cash award that will help fund Patricia’s goal to attend the World Vision’s youth summit this summer in Australia.

Numerous applications for our Women’s Opportunity Award, Soroptimist led us to choose a brave woman who puts her family’s safety and future first. Janet DuBry, a single mother of three had to flee their home to protect her daughter. To further protect all children from abusers, Ms. DuBry created a website and t-shirts beginning a “We are gonna tell” campaign to raise awareness and guide families through recovery and legal action from molestation and child abuse. Working while attending school, Janet is headed for a career in the OC District Attorney’s office so she can work as an advocate for victims in the sex crimes unit. Her Award will go towards her tuition and help with her children’s medical expenses while getting her closer to her goal.

Our honorees share a vision, dedication to hard work for the benefit others is and are grateful for Soroptimist award funds to continue their missions and further live their dreams by making a positive difference in the lives of many. This is the mission of Soroptimists of Huntington Beach, serving our community for 48 years. Our Miss Huntington Beach, to be chosen this Saturday February 19th, will also receive a scholarship for an essay competition amongst pageant contestants about their community service work. Also on our program: a brief presentation by Rose Rivera, Manager of Client Services, Working Wardrobes; servicing at-risk teens and adults who have recently emerged from crisis situations: homelessness, domestic violence, alcohol/drug rehabilitation as well as those recently incarcerated. Huntington Beach, CA) – In October 2010, Alzheimer’s Family Services Center (AFSC) received acknowledgement that the Allergan Foundation has awarded the agency a $3,500 grant in support of Early Stage Dementia Services.

The Allergan Foundation, created in 1998, is committed to providing a lasting and positive impact on the community. Since inception, The Allergan Foundation has granted more than $20 million to worthy causes, focusing in four philanthropic areas: the arts, civic programs, education, and health and human services.
AFSC’s executive director, Cordula Dick-Muelhke, Ph.D., noted, “The Allergan Foundation gives so much to the Orange County community and we are exceedingly grateful that they continue to support our mission. At AFSC, we strive to engage families affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia in services early so they can better cope with daily challenges of memory loss and prepare for the journey ahead. Our early stage dementia services have been developed specifically to benefit the growing number of seniors being identified with early memory loss and the family members who provide care for them at home.”

Notably, as Baby Boomers turn 65, the age after which AD becomes most prevalent, California will witness a doubling of those affected and, correspondingly, a doubling of those caring for a loved one with dementia. In Orange County alone, the number of seniors affected by AD and caregivers will grow to approximately 300,000 by 2030.[1] There is no cure for AD, but improvements in diagnostic techniques have led to earlier diagnosis of the disease – giving families an opportunity to prepare for the emotional, physical, and financial challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia over the long-term.

Unfortunately, many families don’t know where to turn for support when they receive a dementia diagnosis. Given the stigma associated with loss of cognitive abilities in our society, families tend to keep dementia “a secret” and “go it alone” until a crisis, such as wandering, finally leads to getting help. By this time, caregivers may be in poor physical or mental health, and even heightened risk for death, due to the chronic stress of eldercare. In Orange County, AFSC has identified an emerging need for ongoing, year-round support of persons with early memory loss and their care partners, as well as for affected individuals who do not have a family support system. These seniors may live alone, have family caregivers who are disengaged, or rely on neighbors or friends to “check-in” from time-to-time, but do not have access to consistent support.

Helping families access the system of dementia care early is beneficial for both affected individuals and their care partners. Indeed, early stage interventions that integrate education with support and involve both the dementia-affected individual and care partner facilitate “coping as a team, pulling together to face the challenges, and learning to better understand and tolerate one another.”[2] Rather than feeling like “nothing can be done” when dementia strikes, early stage dementia services empower individuals to participate in long-term planning while still able, and care partners to use practical knowledge and skills to manage the multiple challenges of dementia.

Affiliated with the Hoag Neurosciences Institute, Alzheimer’s Family Services Center, a private non-profit agency, is the only Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center in Orange County. The agency fulfills its mission through a continuum of direct care, caregiver support, education, and outreach services. The Orange Coast Mothers of Multiples (OCMOMS) Club is a support and philanthropic group for mothers of multiples. OCMOMS, founded in 1968, is a group that offers support, education and friendship to all mothers and female guardians of twins, triplets and higher order multiples in the coastal Orange County area. We are affiliated with the Southern California Mothers of Twins Clubs (SCMOTC) and the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc. (NOMOTC). We currently have 140 members and continue to grow.

In addition to being a support group for fellow mothers of multiples (MOMs), we also have a large philanthropic emphasis. This year we will be providing baby shower gift baskets to Casa Theresa Women’s Shelter and adopting a family in need for the holidays through Project Self-Sufficiency. Ronald McDonald House will also be a recipient of a donation from our club. Additionally, we raise money to help those in need within our club and provide donations toward scholarships that the SCMOTC provides to deserving twins or triplets, as well as mothers of multiples who wish to continue their education.

The component of the Silent Auction that helps us raise money for our club, are the raffles and donated auction items. To make these raffles successful, we are asking for your donations of products or services.

ALZHEIMER’S FAMILY SERVICE CENTER PARTICIPANTS CONDUCT WALKABILITY STUDY DURING FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK

(Huntington Beach, CA) - On September 20, 2010 fall prevention coalitions and health and senior service agencies across the United States will kick off a week-long celebration of Fall Prevention Awareness Week by holding presentations, health fairs, and demonstrations to raise awareness among older persons and their families about the seriousness of falls and ways to reduce fall risk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an older adult is treated in a hospital emergency room for a fall every 18 seconds, and every 35 minutes an older adult dies as a result of a fall-related injury. In fact, among older adults falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. In California alone, 1.3 million older adults experience an injury due to falling each year.

The good news is that falls are preventable. A combination of interventions has been found to significantly reduce falls in the older adult population. One intervention is to ensure one’s physical environment is safe, which is why Alzheimer’s Family Services Center plans to celebrate Fall Prevention Awareness Week by completing a Walkability Study in two of our favorite Huntington Beach parks. Participants in the Center’s early-stage dementia program will be teaming up with community volunteers to complete a survey of the following locations:

Edison Park Monday, September 20, 2010 at 11:00am
Shorecrest Neighborhood Wednesday, September 23, 2010 at 11:00am
(The neighborhood on Bushard/Indianapolis)

Do the park’s sidewalks and paths end abruptly or have uneven surfaces? Are there scary dogs or lots of traffic? Our comprehensive Walkability Study will uncover the answers to these questions and more. Afterwards, the walkability of each park will be scored and survey participants plan to submit any recommendations for improvements to the Huntington Beach City Council.

The staff, participants, and volunteers involved in our Walkability Study want to make our local parks safe for our participants and reduce the risk of falls for all older adults in the community. Please join us in our fall prevention efforts.

Former barbecue restaurant on Main Street in Huntington Beach will convert to a Beach Pit BBQ on July 20 as chain continues to expand.

COSTA MESA – Beach Pit BBQ has acquired Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ in Huntington Beach and is scheduled to convert the restaurant into a Beach Pit BBQ on July 20, according to Beach Pit BBQ Managing Member Tim DeCinces.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to acquire the Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ location on Main St. in Huntington Beach,” DeCinces said. “This obviously gives us a great location on one of Orange County’s most iconic promenades near the Huntington Beach Pier, and we believe our brand is a perfect match for Surf City USA.”
Beach Pit BBQ has restaurants in Costa Mesa, Tustin, Old Towne Orange and soon to be opened eateries in Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo, and the Huntington Beach location will offer similar specials as the others, such as All You Can Eat Ribs on Wednesday nights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday Night Kids Eat Free, Thursday Wine Night and Philly Cheese Steak Fridays.
“In addition to adding a great location to our operations, we are excited to work with Mo’s owner and operator, Les Draper,” DeCinces said. “Les brings a career in sales and a great knowledge of barbecue. Before we opened our first Beach Pit BBQ in Costa Mesa, I was an admirer of Mo’s food and product as one of the few places in Southern California that did real Southern BBQ the right way. From watching Quickbooks on the head, to seeing one of the first IPADS, the HB Chamber Lunch Bunch (this set shot at host Old World German Restaurant), is a fun way to add to the bottom line! Gil from A Night To Remember actually drank a German beer...There's always a raffle at Lunch Bunch! One of the prizes among many, was from the the hosts themselves, Old World. They donated a FREE banquet room (Over $400 value).

The COOL CAMERA spotted two car repair legends out on the outside patio sitting next to each other: Ray Galvin of Skill Craft Body Shop, a Chamber VET since 1977 says hello, and Steve McNamara of H Heaven, fresh off his 31-year anniversary party (featured on HBCOOL). It was great to see two industry pros together. It turns out H Heaven refers tons of work to Skill Craft.

Victoria of the LOCAL HB.COM (HB CONNECT.COM partner), gave last minute instructions to the Relay for Life supporters...and we learned that ZIMALA was chosen among the 10 best eateries in OC!

Justin from PRIMERICA pulls in the crowd in support of Relay for Life in two weeks. Can they beat $100,000? The Chamber has a team, naturally.

The finishing touches were being applied late Wednesday for a scheduled Thursday opening for the newest addition to the T S Restaurants family, SANDY'S BEACH GRILL.
Duke's downstairs cousin will showcase a win-win culinary experience, combining $9 to $18 menu items like Cajun Lamb Chops, Grilled Shrimp Flatbread, Lobster Tacos, and Roasted Turkey & Brie Sandwich.

The guests will have the option to choose a few different plates (small to bigger plates)to share and enjoy. MORE INFO COMING TO COOL, as their soft opening will obviously turn into a welcoming association with Surf City and the many visitors SANDY will comfort and satisfy.

The success that started with Duke's more than 10 years ago, will extend right up to the sand, with SANDY'S BEACH GRILL.
